Charity Golf Event in Tampa to Raise $1 Million for Veterans Groups; New Homes Being Built for Wounded Warriors; Event Sponsored by SAP NS2 and Other Business Leaders

Washington, DC and Tampa, FL — August 23, 2012 — Making a birdie never went toward a better cause! Monday's Birdies for the Brave charity golf event in Tampa will attract members of Congress, governors, and corporate leaders teeing off to support US military service veterans and their families.

Sponsored by SAP National Security Services (SAP NS2), SAP, Intel, and other corporations and associations, the PGA TOUR-affiliated golf tournament will take place at TPC Tampa Bay on Monday, August 27 during the Republican National Convention. House Speaker John Boehner and Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell will co-host the event.

Birdies for the Brave — a national military outreach initiative supported by the PGA TOUR — has raised more than $1 million in cash and other resources through the Tampa event. Two mortgage-free homes, specially adapted for the needs of disabled vets, will be awarded to military families during the event. In all, eight military groups will benefit, including:

  • Homes for Our Troops and Special Operations Warrior Foundation, supported by Phil Mickelson;
  • The Wounded Warrior Project, supported by Frank Lickliter II, Jason Gore, Nick Watney and Boo Weekley;
  • Operation Homefront, supported by Corey Pavin;
  • Navy SEAL Foundation, supported by Jerry Kelly, Vijay Singh and Frank Lickliter II;
  • United Through Reading, supported by Rory Sabbatini;
  • Military Warriors Support Foundation, supported by Ted Purdy;
  • Green Beret Foundation, supported by Bubba Watson; and
  • A special donation will be made to the Tampa Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

"We are excited to be part of a military outreach initiative that honors and pays back the men and women of the US armed forces and their families," said Mark Testoni, President of SAP NS2 and Host Committee member. "SAP NS2 is proud to be part of a community that demonstrates — with actions more than words — our sincere appreciation for our returning military heroes and their families."

Months of work and coordination went into preparing for the event. "Initially, we set out to raise a few hundred thousand dollars, but the combined support from SAP, NS2, Intel and others far exceeded that goal," said Ari Storch, event founder and chairman and partner in the Washington, D.C. government affairs firm Artemis Strategies. "Thanks to the support of our hosts and honorary host committee members, we've transformed Birdies into a pinnacle event in support of our military veterans."

Birdies for the Brave was originally created in 2005 by PGA TOUR player Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy, to support combat-wounded veterans. In 2006, the TOUR adopted Birdies for the Brave and expanded it to include Military Appreciation Day celebrations and Patriots' Outpost military hospitality chalets during TOUR tournaments; complimentary admission for military members during many TOUR events; rehabilitative golf opportunities for wounded warriors; special opportunities for military families, such as Operation Shower, group baby showers for military moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed or seriously injured; and a series of fundraising events conducted at the TOUR's TPC clubs nationwide. The total effort has raised more than $10 million for 10 military homefront groups that are supported by TOUR players, providing critical programs and services to meet the specialized needs of wounded warriors and military families.
